Curriculum Newsletters

Below are our half-termly newsletters which provide detailed information about what the children will be learning about in class.

Update - Monday 11th May

English

This week in our English learning, we have been looking at our new writing outcome which is writing to inform. We have decided to make links to our class guided reading text called 'Me and Mister P' and take the main character, Mister P and write non-chronological reports about polar bears. The children have started to look at the vocabulary used in non-chronological reports as well as gathering facts to help them with their final piece. The children have also been busy developing their understanding of how paragraphs are constructed in a non-chronological report and have practically made their own.

Maths

The children have continued to do a fantastic job with their current maths unit of work on 'Money'. This week we have been looking at finding and calculating change. They have solved a range of problems including those with one-step and problems with more than one-step. The children have been using bar models to help them visualise the problem as well as using an unstructured number line to help them count on to find their change total.

History

We are continuing to learn many different things about the Romans and this week is no exception. We have looked closer at the Roman Army and how there were many different roles and responsibilities. We even had a go at acting out our own Roman Army and learning about how soldiers were punished for not following the rules. Later on in the week, the children discovered further information about the first Roman invasions of Britain and looked at the cause of the invasion and what the consequences of the invasions were.

Spanish

In our Spanish topic this half-term we have been visiting the ice-cream shop. The children can now recite 10 different flavours of ice-cream including: un helado fresa, un helado menta, un helado de cafe and un helado de caramello. The children have also looked at ordering ice creams with a cone or in a pot.

Update - Tuesday 5th May 2026

This half term is certainly speeding by! What another great week in year 3 albeit a little shorter than normal.

English

The children have been crafting their final piece writing inspired by 'The Dark' by Lemony Snickett. The children have been writing in chunks of writing developing their paragraphs over a whole story. They have been using a range of writing techniques including: fronted adverbials, coordinating conjunctions, subordinating conjunctions and inverted commas for direct speech. The children have also been learning to check their writing carefully by reading back with a checklist.

Maths

We have started our new unit of work on 'Money' this week. The children have begun recapping previous learning from year 2 where they have been identifying pounds and pence. They have retrieved their knowledge around the value of different coins and notes. We have progressed learning on from their to look at converting between pounds and pence.

RE

This half term, the children have been busy studying the key religion 'Hinduism' with a particular focus on looking at Hindu beliefs around God and how this is made up of different parts. The children have been comparing this idea to other known religions including Christianity having a focus on one God and the same as Islam. They made sensible and considered comparisons demonstrating the fundamental British value of 'tolerance'.

Update - Monday 27th April

What a fantastic week we have had in year 3! The sunny weather has certainly helped.

Swimming

The children have enjoyed their second swimming lesson at Basingstoke Aquadrome this week. They were exceptionally behaved and participated in the session with great determination and resilience.

Portals to the Past - Romans!

This week the children welcomed back Martin from Portals to the Past. This time, Martin was working with the children on a Romans inspired and themed workshop. The children spent all day with Martin discovering more about the Romans and their invasion of Britain. The children loved all of the different active parts of the day; a special thank you to those of the children who dressed up for the occasion.

English

This week in English the children have been writing their 'Apprentice Piece' for 'The Dark' by Lemony Snickett. The children have been using and applying the skills taught so far including: inverted commas for direct speech, expanded noun phrases and sentence structure variation. The children also worked hard to edit and improve their apprentice piece ahead of starting the final piece.

Times Tables

The children continue to impress me with their enthusiasm for learning their times tables. After 2 weeks of learning the 7 times tables and with improvements in our weekly testing scores, the children have moved onto the 9 times tables. This is a great achievement at this stage of the year as more fluent times tables knowledge will continue to boost their confidence across the mathematics curriculum. Keep encouraging your child to log onto Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) for at least 3 times per week so that we can continue to track their progress carefully.

Update - Monday 20th April

Swimming

This week in we commenced our swimming lessons at Basingstoke Aquadrome. The children were assessed by the instructors and placed into the relevant groupings. The children practiced swimming on their fronts using a range of buoyancy aids including noodles and floats. The children also used accurate kicking techniques to travel on their front including the appropriate action for front crawl.

Maths

During our Maths lesson this week we have been concentrating on finding unit fractions of amounts. The children have remembered that a unit fraction has 1 as a numerator. They have used counters to share their whole into equal parts to find the unit fraction of amount. The children have then progressed into their white rose work books to answer a range of questions.

History

This week we have in our history lessons we have continued learning more about the Romans. We looked at the founding of the city of Rome and looked at different viewpoints. One viewpoint we looked at was the Roman story of Romulus and Remus. The children also studied another viewpoint which was looking at historical evidence surrounding the founding of Rome including the building of small villages along the River Tiber. Later on in the week, the children were also looking at the different stages of the Roman era including: Roman Kingdom, Roman Republic and Roman Empire. The children studied how they were different including having a king, voted representatives or an Emperor. This will set the children up well for our forthcoming visit by 'Portals to the Past' next week.

Update - Monday 13th April 2026

Welcome back to another amazing term of learning in Year 3! It is quite hard to believe that we only have 1 term left until the end of the year. The children have settled back into school really well and have had a great week of learning.

English

During our English lessons this week, the children have been exploring the story 'The Dark' by Lemony Snickett. The children have been introduced to the main character, Laszlo. Laszlo has one great fear which is 'The Dark'. We have used different immersion techniques to help the children explore the text and its characters including freeze frames. The children worked in small groups to recreate key moments of the story to show Laszlo and his fear. Later on in the week, we looked at hot seating as well as recapping previous learning on writing descriptive sentences.

Maths

This week we have begun our second unit of work on Fractions. The children have been mastering adding fractions with the same denominator. They have remembered that when adding fractions with the same denominator that we only add the numerator. We used numicon to represent the different parts of the whole. Later on in the week, we also subtracted fractions with the same denominator, again using numicon to help us see the relationship between the part and whole.

History

After much patience, the children have started the history topic about 'The Romans'. I know that this has been a keen interest of them and now the wait is finally over! We started the topic by thinking about what questions we would like to find out about the Romans before we finish the topic before the summer holidays. After that, we made a class timeline to understand the chronology of key events in the Roman Empire before creating our own versions in our books.

Update - Monday 23rd March 2026

They have looked at fractions on a number line, counting forwards and backwards with fractions on a number line and comparing equivalent fractions on a number line. The children have also continued to solve a range of reasoning problems to extend their thinking.

World Book Day
This week saw our annual World Book Day here at Chiltern. The year 3 children certainly did the school proud with their excellent costumes that they crafted and wore for the day. We had great fun taking part in several World Book Day activities including a character treasure hunt where there were different book characters stuck all over the school for them to guess. They also swapped classes with year 1 and shared different books together. Later, the children used the reader’s theatre approach to read an extract of text, working on smoothness, to perform to the rest of the school in assembly. Before the end of the day assembly, we also shared ‘The Masked Reader’ where there were different members of staff reading a well-known story book wearing a mask. They had great fun taking part in making the guesses and the children got all of the guesses correct. Well Done Year 3!

Geography

As part of our rocks, rumbles and relics topic, this week we have looked at an earthquake case study by looking at an earthquake that took place in the town of Amatrice in Italy. The children looked at the short-term and long-term impact of the earthquake. They also had fun exploring about earthquakes can cause a tsunami. We studied one of the most powerful and destructive tsunamis from Boxing Day 2004 in the Indian Ocean where they used their map skills to locate different countries that were affected by this natural disaster.

Update - Monday 23rd February 2026

Welcome back to another half term in Year 3! It is quite unbelievable that we are half-way through the academic year. The children have been getting up to all sorts of amazing things this week with their learning.

English

We have started our new English learning journey using the key text driver ‘Don’t feed the bear’. The children have been starting to think about persuasion and stopping people from feeding the bear. They have explored character thoughts, feeling and emotions so that they can understand how different events in the story have made people feel. We have made the connection to persuasion as when we persuade people, we are appealing to their emotions. The children wrote questions for one of the main characters in the story and we used hot seating to bring this to life. Towards the end of the week, the children were looking at improving their vocabulary and using this in their own sentences.

Maths

This week in Maths the children have started learning about fractions. They have been identifying and understanding unit fractions as well as non-unit fractions. We have challenged them all through the use of problem solving and reasoning questions to get them really thinking mathematically about these maths concepts.

Geography

As part of our Rocks, Relics and Rumbles topic, we have been looking more closely at Earthquakes this week. The children retrieved their previous learning about tectonic plates to help them understand further about how Earthquakes happen. We labelled a diagram of an earthquake/tectonic plates to help us see how this natural disaster occurs. The children then also wrote their own explanatory sentences about how earthquakes happen.

Update - Monday 9th February 2026

Update - Monday 26th January 2026

What another amazing week of learning we have had in year 3!

English

This week in English has seen the year 3 children starting their new unit of work. They began the week by making predictions about details stated and implied using different pictorial clues. We used sentence stems to help construct our predictions. We then watched a video clip to see if our predictions were correct. We realised that the story we are learning about in English is called ‘The Man on the Moon’ with the main character of the old man being isolated on the moon. Later on in the week, the children developed their vocabulary and orally retold the story in different chunks.

Geography

During our Geography lessons this week, the children have continued to learn lots about volcanoes. We started the week learning more about the ring of fire and how this particularly fiery and rumbling area of the world has the world’s most volcanoes in it. We also then moved learning on to find out more about the different parts of a volcano including: the crater, throat, magma chamber and vent.

RE

This week in RE we have continued to be learning about the idea of miracles. We have investigated further Christian teachings about miracles where we read a story about Jesus healing a paralysed man. We read the story as a class and then acted it out to help us remember the different parts. After we had acted out the story and showed the class, we then reflected about how this story showed or told a miracle.

The children have really impressed with their writing craft and the improvements made in their handwriting is truly commendable.

Maths

We have looked at a new idea when dividing this week in Maths by using division with remainders. The children used lots of practical resources to help them share and group equally, this helped them to see that a remainder is an amount left over that cannot be shared equally. The children also made great connections to their times tables knowledge to help them with this learning.

Geography

We are continuing to learn a lot about our 'Rocks, Relics and Rumbles' topic. The children have been exploring about tectonic plates including the supercontinent 'pangea' and how continental drift caused our world to look the way it does. The children also made comparisons between the different types of tectonic plate boundary.

This week the children have been thinking about who they would like to vote for as their school councillor. On Monday, children listened to those of the children in the class who put their names forward to apply for the rule. The applicants read their application forms to the rest of the class. We then voted for the top 3 children who then went through to the final vote. On Thursday, the polling station opened where we went and voted for the year 3 councillor. Congratulations to Blake who will represent our class this year!

Update 4 - wb Monday 22nd September

This has been a very fun and exciting week in Year 3! On Wednesday the children were visited by ‘Stone Age Martin’ from Portals to the Past. The children spent the day with ‘Stone Age Martin’ with a full day of interactive learning and activities all about the Stone Age.

Also, in our English lessons, we have had a special delivery from ‘Robin Hood’. She sent us a box of clues as well as her very own story book. Inside the story book, she set us a challenge of telling everyone the real story about her.

Update 3 - wb 15th September

As part of our Art project with ‘Contrast and Complement’ we have created our own watercolour montage using shapes and water colour mixing. Here we are in action!

Update 2 - wb 8th September
Year 3 have been busy in English learning about the key text ‘How to wash a woolly mammoth’. We have been drafting our own set of instructions.

Update 1 - wb 3rd September

This week has been a fantastic start to the year. The children have been eager to start some of their new topics especially Art. We have been looking at contrasting and complementary colours including making our own colour wheels.
