Year 6

Welcome to Year 6!

In Year 6, the class teacher is Miss Ginn.

If you have any questions, please come and speak to Miss Ginn. If she is not around at the beginning and end of the day, you can contact the school office and request an appointment.

Keep referring back to this page for regular updates about the children's learning.

Home learning project

Our visit to The Meadow to share our Frozen Kingdom learning

Week 2 update:

Writing:

The children are now experts in the life of an Arctic fox, including their very funny hunting skill of nose-diving into the snow! We are now starting a new learning journey diary writing - the children will write a diary from the point of view of Ernest Shackleton's journey to Antarctica.

Maths:

The children completed an end of unit assessment last week on a previously learnt topic - converting units. They all had great scores, which shows how far they have come with their recall skills.

Guided reading:

We are working on our speed and underatanding when reading to ensure we can be effiecient in our SATs.

Snow!

Spring 1 - week 1 update.

It was lovely to see the children back after the holidays. We have tackled ratio this week in maths, begun our Arctic animal research for our writing tasks (we have watched some amazing videos from Sir David Attenborough) and started a new guided reading book - A kind of spark.

SATs booster club will be on a Monday with me, we will be concentrating on maths reasoning this half term.

Update - End of Autumn term.

First of all, I would like to say thank you to all of the children for making this term so wonderful. They have really grown into their own year 6 personalities and become the 4 R's champions; ready, responsible, respectful and resilient.

Maths

We have finished off the year with consilidating all of our learning and revisiting tricky topics to secure understanding. I will be starting SATs booster clubs after Christmas, and will send home arithmetic worksheets to help the children with their confidence.

English

In true Miss Ginn style, we brought The Grinch and The Nightmare before Christmas to life in the classroom. The children had the challenge of persuading Jack Skellington to give back Christmas to Christmas Town. As always, the children rose to the challenge, with hilarious results - apparently 95% of adults like their job- and I am pleased to say Christmas has been restored to its rightful place.

Next term

Our key topic next term is Frozen Kingdoms - If the children want to get in some prior learning, Blue Planet by David Attenborough is incredible to watch.

Update - wb Monday 17th November

English

This week we had a mysterious gift arrive from The Grinch! He is retiring and has asked year 6 to help him write a set of instructions for his new recruits of The Grinch Training Academy! The children are enjoying using imperative (bossy) words to explain exactly what needs to happen.

Maths

We went on as measuring mission around the school to check we could convert between mm, cm and m. They came up with plans of how they could estimate the weight of the whole school. I heard many bizarre comparisons, including knowing the weight of an elephant and then estimating how many elephants could fit in our school!

English hook - We are on The Grinch's naughty list

Update - wb Monday 10th November

English

This week we have continued our look into atmospheric setting descriptions, using The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe as our key text. The children have been enjoying looking at how the book compares to the film, and how the author used powerful language to set the mood.

Maths

In our Maths work this week, we have been continuing our fractions journey. We have moved onto multiplying fractions, which is tricky, but the children have risen to the challenge as always!

Reading

This week we are concentrating on retrieving and infering from our text - The Nowhere Emporium. The children are enjoying finding out more about the characters, and guessing how the story will end.

Week beginning 20th October.

It has been a busy week in year 6, as always, the children have risen to the challenge.

Writing

This week we have finished our retelling of the story 'Unspoken' by Kwame Alexander. The children had to use figurative and emotive language choices to convey to the reader the struggle the African slaves went through during the transatlantic slave trade era.

Guided reading

We have continued to use our inference skills to understand the authors word choices. We will be looking at vocabulary after the half term, to ensure the children are fully understanding what they have read.

Maths

This week we have been continuing our deep dive into the world of fractions. The children have been learning about how to recognise equivalent fractions and how to convert improper fractions into mixed number. To help them with this, they have used practical maths resources such fractions chart and bar models.

Please continue to help them with the formal methods of addition and subtraction at home, as this is our next arithmetic focus.

Topic learning

In RE, the children created a poster to inform others on how a Muslim shows their commitment to their God. In History, we looked at Britain's involvement in slavery. In science, the children were able to explain how blood becomes oxygenated and deoxygenated.

We have been immersing ourselves into the life of a slave during the time of  Triangular slave trade. The children have created beautiful figurative language to describe how the slaves felt and what they saw.

The children have taken on this challenging subject with maturity and pride.

Our year 6 prefects!

Fairytale biography outcome - we read our stories to year 2. The children read beautifully and made me feel very proud of their hard work

The past few weeks of half term have flown by! The children have amazed me (as always) with their incredible story telling skills. They all created a biography of the Olympian, Simone Biles, with a Chiltern twist - it was written in the style of a fairytale.

In Maths, the children have been absorbing all their new learning and putting into practice in their reasoning.

We are continuing our topic of the circulatory system by making blood! Photos to follow.

I am looking forward to having the class back together after the residential week, and getting stuck into some SAT's practice.

Have a lovely week :)
